5 Signs AI Has Stopped Recommending Your Business
Every week I run a simple test on local businesses. I ask ChatGPT or Gemini “who’s the best [their category] in [their area]?” and see if the business shows up.
More than half the time, they don’t. And the owner has no idea.
Here are five signs your business may have quietly dropped off AI’s shortlist — and what each one means. You can check every one of these in the next ten minutes.
1. You’ve never asked ChatGPT what it says about you
The easiest check is also the one almost nobody does. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google (with AI Overviews on) and ask the questions your customers would ask: “Who’s the best plumber in North Vancouver?” or “What’s a good bookkeeper for a small business near Lonsdale?” If you don’t come up, you don’t come up. Everything else on this list is a reason why.
2. Your last new review was more than a month ago
Not your total review count — the pace. AI systems reward businesses whose review stream is alive. Two new reviews this month beats fifty reviews from two years ago. If your review pace has slowed, so has your visibility. If you’ve stopped asking customers for reviews, that’s why.

3. Your Google Business Profile has gone quiet
When was the last time you posted a photo, an update, or a promotion to your Google Business Profile? If the answer is “I don’t remember,” AI is reading you as dormant. Weekly activity is the modern floor — the businesses AI recommends are the ones that look alive.
4. Your business appears under two phone numbers or two addresses online
This one is invisible until you check. Google your business name and scroll through the top results — your website, BBB, Yelp, industry directories. If any two disagree on your contact details, AI is losing confidence in you as an entity, and defaulting to a competitor whose information is consistent everywhere. This is the single most common problem I see.
5. You’ve noticed calls or leads dropping — with no clear reason
You didn’t raise prices. Your reviews still look great. Your website is up. But the phone rings less. This is the pattern I see most often in businesses that were doing well in traditional search two years ago and never noticed the shift. If you’re feeling it and can’t explain it, that alone is worth looking into.
The good news: every one of these is fixable, and most of the fixes cost you nothing but attention.

When customers ask AI for a recommendation, are they recommending you? — what an AI visibility audit actually looks at, and how to run the first check on yourself. - Why getting recommended by AI isn’t a one-time job — why AI visibility decays over time and what ongoing maintenance looks like.
